Since each patient has different needs, breast implants come in many different shapes, sizes, and varieties to meet these diverse needs. During your breast augmentation consultation at our South Lake Tahoe area practice, we’ll discuss which breast implants will be best to meet your aesthetic goals. Below we’ve covered some of the basics about the different types of breast implants available and some related concerns.
Composition of Breast Implants
There are two kinds of compositions at our practice serving South Lake Tahoe: silicone breast implants and saline breast implants. Silicone breast implants consist of silicone gel inside of a silicone shell, whereas saline breast implants consist of saline solution contained within a silicone shell. While silicone breast implants generally look and feel more like natural breasts, excellent results are also possible with saline breast implants.
Size of Breast Implants
Breast implants come in various sizes to meet the needs of patients. Note that bigger breast implants are not always better than smaller breast implants. In fact, many patients do not need drastic breast enlargement in order to achieve their aesthetic goals.
Shape of Breast Implants
Breast implants come in two different shapes: round breast implants and teardrop-shaped breast implants. Round breast implants resemble a ball that is partially compressed while teardrop-shaped breast implants slope outward in a contour similar to natural breasts. The best breast implant shape for our South Lake Tahoe patients will depend on the individual patient’s aesthetic goals.
Projection of Breast Implants
In addition to the size and shape of the breast implants, the profile/projection of the breast implants is important to consider. This essentially refers to the amount of outward projection a breast implant achieves. This is generally divided into low profile breast implants, moderate profile breast implants, moderate-plus profile breast implants, and high profile breast implants.
Texture of Breast Implants
Breast implants come in either smooth or textured varieties. Textured breast implants are less prone to shifting than smooth breast implants, though they tend to cost more. As with all of the other considerations, this issue can be discussed with the doctor in more detail during your consultation.
